Full Moon Lunar Eclipse – May 2023

The latest Eclipse season hits the point of culmination tomorrow (Friday 5th May) with the full moon lunar eclipse at 15 degrees of Scorpio. (And a culmination it is… even a Grand Finale of sorts, as it closes the last 18-month cycle of eclipses on the Taurus-Scorpio axis that kicked off in November 2021. The next one in Scorpio will be in 2031…)

Now, calling something the finale already seems kind of final, but when we zoom into the symbology of the chart, and all the layers of meaning inside it, we see that this theme of letting go is pretty damn strong. Amongst many things, Scorpio symbolizes death; psychology, the underworld, the darkness. All that is hidden down in the darkest parts of our Being…

Well, not for much longer… Time for some long-awaited illumination

Every Full Moon is like this to an extent. The Sun directly opposes the Moon, which always brings in a high beam of consciousness to anything that needs to emerge into the light … But here it feels a little more akin to a bolt of lightening, with Uranus conjunct the Sun on one side (bringing the shockwaves and sudden change element to proceedings), and Mercury on the other. Mercury the Messenger. Uranus is also the Great Awakener, symbolizing Truth. So, then, what is going to come up – suddenly – to be recognized?

This Lunar Eclipse is also on the South Node of Scorpio, which adds another layer to the theme of letting go. Something needs to be released. Something needs to die, because it’s not coming with us as we move into the forthcoming cycle. But before we can release it, we first need to accept it. We first need to recognize it. We need to feel it in our bodies. It was always a part of you and your existence, and now it’s time for change.

What have you been carrying inside you that is no longer required?

Typing ‘required’ made me smile… it sounds so detached (and so far from anything associated with Scorpio, you know, like ‘high emotional intensity’) … but, here’s the thing: detachment (and freedom) is the prize if we make this inner breakthrough. Incidentally, ‘breakthrough’, ‘detached’ and ‘freedom’ are all words that belong to Uranus; and the ruler of this Scorpio Eclipse is Pluto, now retrograde in Aquarius – ruled by Uranus – at 0 degrees).

A lightening bolt of truth (Uranus) pierces the veil (Scorpio.) One thing’s for sure – once you see something, you can’t unsee it… and any keys we’re able to see now that we recognize have been holding us back, can finally give us the freedom to rise from the ashes (Scorpio, Pluto)… with no more looking back… (South Node Scorpio). Are you ready to take back your innate power? (Pluto)

And this might all sound exciting, and valiant, and even somewhat revolutionary (Uranus), but the emphasis is on our inner world here. Our emotional world. Make no mistake about it, Scorpio is an emotional sign. It is also a sign that keeps those emotions very deeply under radar – down in the murkiest and cloudiest of waters; hidden often times even from ourselves. But, alongside the revelatory force of Uranus, we have such an amazing support of energies for this journey, including Mercury sextile Saturn, giving us a boatload of focus.

This full Moon in Scorpio will also be trining Mars in Cancer (co-ruler of this Eclipse, along with Pluto), and Neptune in Pisces… This gives us a gorgeous grand trine of flowing water energy to support us diving fully into it. Mars and the Moon are actually in mutual reception (right now, the Moon is ruling Scorpio, which is Mars’ traditional ruler, and vice versa. These are their fall positions – which are none too comfortable (fire planet Mars in sensitive, emotional, watery Cancer?) – but one thing’s for sure… they’ve got each other’s back.

Even Saturn – which is very concerned with bringing things into the material plane – is now in watery, compassionate, transcendental Pisces. This is about finding self-mastery through our emotions (Saturn in Pisces). A higher understanding (Pisces) is something we need to ground into our reality (Saturn) now … something that is echoed with the Sun, Mercury and Uranus in Taurus. And Taurus speaks of reality; of the tangible. The body. Spirituality (Pisces) is no longer something that’s outside us. We are living breathing temples. And the body is Holy. It’s time to reconnect back to the Centre of the Universe. Ourselves.

Which brings us back to personal power again – ultimately the reason for this whole Scorpionic shedding debacle. Why do we have to keep on dying? Well, because we have to keep on moving forward… and first, we are birthing new versions of ourselves.

Because, as Glinda the Good Witch said to Dorothy, ‘you had the power all along, my dear’.

Indeed, themes of power and control are pretty big in this eclipse chart. Of course, these energies will be playing out in some way or another in each of our own personal Universe, but they’ll also be playing out on the grand stage of the collective field. What truths will be unveiled? Will there be a shocking message? What needs to come up and be faced that has not yet been fully acknowledged?

This is a time for radical honesty (Lunar Eclipse in Scorpio opposite Sun, Uranus and Mercury).

Hmm… Taurus and Scorpio are on the financial axis, so let’s see what’s going to happen here – and possibly dramatically (Uranus)

One other thing to note is that Pluto being at 0 degrees of Aquarius is very key. This is the same degree as the Great Conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn on December 21st 2020. Aquarius symbolizes technology, and the future; and in 2020, these energies began to seed a new vision for humanity. Now, Pluto will be here until June 11th, before beginning its retrograde back into Capricorn. It then moves into Aquarius properly – for the next 20 years – in January 2024. So you could say that right now, we’re getting the chance for a little sneak-peek. There’s almost a feeling of warning about it.

At the end of the day, we are always in choice

And Taurus rules the value system. What is your price? What are you willing to put your head in the sand for, for your apparent convenience (Venus squaring Neptune)? Pluto is both power and Soul. What are you willing to sell yours for?

At the end of it all… Where there’s death, there is always rebirth. There’s a sense of an unconscious decluttering for this Eclipse… but there’s also that culmination, as well. What’s coming through here? What’s the new thing? What’s the new direction (Uranus)? You can absolutely recall the past 18 months and any themes and aspects you’ve been working with… and it’s also worth a look back at the last season of this axis, which was 6 months previously, in October/November 2022. What was moving through you then? Is there anything that’s coming up now to be completed?

Enjoy the ride, cosmic comrades.

Tip* Mercury will be retrograde until May 14th. Wait till the New Moon in Taurus on May 19th to start moving ahead with concrete plans

About the author - meet Diana Shamanic

Just over ten years ago, Diana Shamanic (aka Karen Farini) left her London life (as co-founder and owner of burlesque supper club Volupté) to go tripping 'round Asia. Here, she would ultimately wind up escaping yet another brush with muggle existence, after a 3-year stint running a same-but-different business (this time a backpacking hostel on the island of Koh Phangan in Thailand). By 2018, though... Well, let's just say her inner world had started to shift quite dramatically.... After various stints in Bali, Israel and the jungles of Peru, she's back again living on this magical crystal island, where she's just about to open 'Pandora's Box', offering psychic astrology readings and shamanic journeying into the body and beyond.
